July 15, 2025 | 12:00–14:00 CET | European Parliament, Brussels
Hosted by MEP Seán Kelly
Cancer is on track to become the leading cause of death in the EU by 2035. Despite a 10% reduction in overall cancer mortality between 2010 and 2020, major disparities in outcomes persist across and within Member States. Participation in population-based screening programmes remains suboptimal, and access to innovation is uneven.
To address this challenge, the European Alliance for Personalised Medicine (EAPM) is pleased to announce the high-level event “Every Second Counts: Modernizing Cancer Screening to Save Lives”, taking place at the European Parliament in Brussels on July 15, 2025. Hosted by MEP Seán Kelly, the event will convene key EU policymakers, clinicians, researchers, patient advocates, and representatives from major EU4Health-funded initiatives.
Objectives of the event include:
- Highlighting breakthroughs from EU-funded projects on prostate, lung, and gastric cancer screening;
- Addressing systemic barriers to implementation of innovative screening tools, such as AI, risk-based approaches, and digital platforms;
- Issuing targeted policy recommendations to reduce disparities and modernize cancer screening across Europe.
Speakers will include senior officials from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, leading Members of the European Parliament, and scientific experts from projects including PRAISE-U, SOLACE, BEACON, BRECISE, and SYNTHIA.
The programme will also feature a multi-stakeholder panel discussion on integrating innovation into healthcare systems, with perspectives from regional health authorities, civil society, and the patient community.
Expected outcomes:
- Policy recommendations for scaling innovation in early detection;
- Greater alignment with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan;
- Commitments to reduce inequalities in access and outcomes.
This event is part of EAPM’s ongoing commitment to advancing personalised, equitable, and timely cancer care across the EU.
